Matthew 7:1-6

Jesus most famous sermon is called the Sermon on the Mount, and it covers chapters 5-7 of the Gospel of Matthew. In chapter 5, Jesus shows how obedience to Him begins in the heart and flows out of love for Him and love for other people. Starting in chapter 6, Jesus focuses on hypocrisy. He reveals how easy it is for us to do religious actions with wrong motives. He primarily focuses on how we act outwardly pious in order to impress other people. He returns to the subject of hypocrisy at the beginning of chapter 7. Hypocrisy, left unchecked, will always lead us to arrogant judgmentalism. We will not only pretend to be something we’re not, but we’ll condemn others in the process.

The point of Jesus’ instruction in verses 1-6 is simple: Be merciful, not judgmental

This sermon was preached at Redeeming Grace Church in Fairfax, VA on March 31, 2019.
