A Preaching Plan for the Sermon on the Mount

Updated: 8 hours ago

by Jason Wredberg

The Sermon on the Mount (Mt. 5-7) is not explaining the way into the Kingdom of God, but the way of his kingdom. It is a sermon for those who have already believed in Jesus—they are the blessed of the Beatitudes. If one is not careful, the Sermon on the Mount can be dismissed as altogether irrelevant, or it can be twisted into a system of ethical demands embraced by those who hope to earn their way into the kingdom. The Sermon on the Mount is a blueprint for how followers of Jesus can be in the world, but not of the world. It gives the church guidance as it navigates cultural confusion and social upheaval. The words of Jesus lead Christians toward a clear vision of what it means to be salt and light—to infiltrate the world with the love of Jesus and the transforming power of the gospel.
